So what can you do to increase your chances of securing the rental property you want in this tight market?

1. Be ready

Have all your documentation ready to go. Before you can apply for a property you will need:

  • at least two personal references
  • the application form
  • proof of employment including employer contact and
  • payslips
  • a cover letter
  • previous rental history
  • pet information including breed and registration details
  • all the required identification (photo ID, Medicare card, birth certificate)

And remember to let your references know to expect a phone call.

2. Be active

Sign up to real estate newsletters to receive new listing alerts or make a daily habit of each morning, checking the recent listings page on your local real estate agent.

Attend open houses and put your best foot forward by showing up on time, presenting a well-groomed appearance and speaking reasonably with the agent.

It’s a good idea to call the real estate agent first to register your interest in the inspection and bring your application documentation with you so you can apply then and there.

3. Be proactive

If you put in an application to rent a property, don’t wait more than a week to hear back from the real estate. If you haven’t received a call after a few days, reach out to them, this proactive attitude is often something that agents are looking for in candidates.

Now that is all said and done, here are three rental properties you could secure as your new home today. You know what to do, so we look forward to hearing from you!
