Mackay’s new barber shop is a cut above the rest

There’s a new trendy barber shop in Mackay, creating quite a stir.

Moldielox Barber Shop has opened in Gordon Street, bringing men of Mackay a cool place to hang out and be pampered.

Owner Amy Hooper said after eight years in the hair industry, she noticed there’s not enough places for men to go and be pampered like there are for women, and the idea of Moldielox Barber Shop was born.

“Having a hardworking husband and a brother, I realised there needs to be more out there for men to pamper them.”

Being made redundant due to COVID, gave Amy the opportunity to turn the idea into a reality.

“I was made redundant right at the start of everything and thought to myself, ‘oh well, you wanted to do this for a while, why not do it now and make yourself a job’, so I did.”

When we spoke to the Mackay born and bred local for this business profile, Moldielox Barber Shop had been open for all of three days and Amy said she has been overwhelmed by the response.

“I’m surprised by how many people are supporting me. Everyone’s come to check it out.”

The now 30-year-old described it as a “proper monumental week” – opening a new business and celebrating a milestone birthday.

Moldeilox Barber Shop is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a bit of character.

“I wanted to create somewhere that if men did have to wait, they’re hanging out in a comfortable space. I have a pool table, fridge full of refreshments and a TV with something good always streaming.

“And I wanted something with a bit of character. There’s something new to look at all the time.”

Baileux owner Benjamin Molineux was one of Amy’s first customers and said Moldielox Barber Shop is everything a gentlemen should expect.

“Moldielox has an old school barber feel about it with classic artworks and furnishings, a pub size pool table, beer fridge and slick black leather couch – everything a gentleman should expect for that half an hour where it is truly all about them.”

Amy described making the move from hairdresser to barber as simply finding the “cool side”.

“I was a hairdresser first, now I have found the cool side.

“I’ve always been someone who has bounced between being really girly or a tomboy, and I’ve always connected well with men.

“Being a barber means I get to pamper them and hang out with them. And I believe I do good haircuts, so that’s the bonus on top.”

Benjamin said, “Amy has gone above and beyond to show her barber shop will rival some of the best-known barbers in Mackay, I will certainly be back!”
