Early estate

Located in Palm Avenue, the post office is reportedly near where the original homestead was built by Hector MacKenzie Finlayson.

An early pioneer from Seaforth in Scotland, Finlayson named Seaforth in 1879 after selecting a large area of country in the Parish of Ossa near Cape Hillsborough to create a cattle breeding property named Seaforth Estate.

But after the majority of the herd died from cattle tick fever and red water disease, Finlayson had no further use for the estate.

Township established

It was sold back to the Government for closer settlement in about 1900. With the blocks soon taken up by retired people, pensioners and farmers wanting seaside homes, so began the small township of Seaforth.

In the years that followed, trees were felled to make posts and rafters to form the first houses of the district, residents farmed their own crops, Seaforth’s first school opened in 1935 and the post office in 1948.

Since then, the post office has evolved into a one-stop-shop for the local community and tourists alike.
