Healthy Clean and Green: small changes, big impact

FEW businesses are launched not for financial gain. But Mackay’s Healthy Clean and Green was.

Owner, Wendy Steindl said she launched her business purely for the environment.

“I launched Healthy Clean and Green for the environment, not for financial gain.

“Obviously I want to keep the business afloat but bringing better choice products to the Mackay community conveniently and affordably makes it easier for people to make the switch to more environmentally friendly products and encourages them to make better choices, which has always been my main aim.”

Small changes can have a big impact

Wendy launched her business nearly four years ago to show people how making small changes can have a big impact on their homes, their health and the environment.

“I created Healthy Clean and Green to share with people what I’ve learned, the research behind finding a better choice product can be time-consuming and frustrating and share information on the products that I have decided to use and to hopefully inspire and guide them in making small and affordable changes in your everyday life that will have a big impact on their home, their health and their environment without drastically affecting their lifestyle or budget.”

Products to inspire change

And while she shows people the products she recommends via their online shop, market stalls and social media, Wendy said she doesn’t push their products.

“For the same reasons customers will rarely see our products on sale. I buy products wholesale and mark them up just enough to cover the costs of running the business. It is because I want to keep prices affordable that Healthy Clean and Green is an online and market stall business run from a home office.

“If I do have products on sale it will be because it is a product that I have decided not to stock anymore and I want to clear it out or maybe it has been display stock for a while and because I’m packing it in and out often it might not be looking pristine anymore or sometimes the wholesalers have sales and if I can get a popular product cheaper than usual, I will pass that saving onto my customers.”

Wendy said they have four main categories in their range: bathroom, kitchen, laundry and office with over 50 products.

“I do extensive research on all products before I introduce them to the Healthy Clean and Green range and won’t stock a product just because it is the current on-trend product. If I don’t believe it to truly be a better choice option I won’t stock it. Some of the things I take into consideration when making my decision about a product include (in no particular order) quality, cost, ethics, sustainability, convenience, packaging, ownership, production and product miles.

“Since the start, I have always opted for Australian owned products where possible and support local and other small better choice businesses with an abundance mentality.

“And while I want to save the world, I don’t want to take over the world… Mackay is a big enough town… if I could get all of Mackay choosing better choice it would have a huge impact on the state of our environment.”

Popular products

When asked what is Healthy Clean and Green’s most popular product, Wendy said, “It is hard to pick a single most popular product.

“From the kitchen category the most popular product is most definitely the Safix Scrub Pads, from the bathroom category better choice tree-free toilet paper, laundry hands down would be stainless steel pegs and from the out and about category would be the stainless steel insulated water bottles.”

Sharing knowledge and passion for the environment

Wendy said what she’d like the people of Mackay to know about her business is that behind the shop front there is a person who is extremely passionate about the future of the environment.

“I’m happy to have a chat in the hope of educating or being educated, I’m happy to toss around ideas, share my knowledge and encourage people to make better choices without just trying to pocket their money and sell them a product.”
