Top decoration trends for autumn

The top design trends for autumn are out but before we get into them, let’s look at why we seasonally decorate.

The changing of the seasons makes us feel different ways and new colours and textures in our homes have a similar effect.

Colours can impact mood so introducing new colours into your home is important.

It makes sense to redecorate with the seasons to reflect how you are feeling and breathe new life into your home each season.

Dulux has released the top design trends for 2023 and this autumn we can expect to see a “combination of warm neutrals that help to create the cocooning atmosphere we crave in our homes as the seasons change”.

To introduce an earthy colour into your home this autumn, Dulux recommends trying one of the Dulux Connect palette, which is filled with “beautiful earth-based neutrals that are easy to decorate with”.

If you want to try something truly different, Dulux suggests running your chosen earthy wall colour onto the ceiling to “create a truly enveloping feeling”.

Using two warm earthy colours and running them from floor to ceiling, “wraps the room in warmth”, Dulux says.

Using colours can also highlight your home’s unique characteristics and embrace your natural surroundings and this should be considered when planning an autumn update.

Dulux says adding a deep hue can be a fast and effective way to accentuate existing architectural features such as a window or artwork.

Of course, if you are unsure about painting your white ceilings a non-white colour or even painting all your walls, Dulux says you can still introduce some autumn earthy colours by “painting small furniture pieces, such as side tables, planters or vases, and then add in cushions and throws in similar tones”.

But before you commit to either ceiling, walls or furniture, it is always a good idea to test paint colours. Use colour stickers or sample pots and “view them at different times of day and night, under both natural and artificial light,” says Dulux.

Finally, texture is the key to making any space feel inviting and Dulux recommends for a cosy and comfortable feel this autumn, mix and match soft-touch, tactile fabrics and natural materials such as linens, velvets, corduroy and soft leathers in the same colour palette to create a cohesive look.

Velvet is always on trend and will continue to be so this autumn, as well as suede. Both fabrics have a luxurious look that adds a touch of glamour to your home.

Marble and brass are also expected to be staples this autumn due to their beauty, durability and warmth.
